About this deal

The Pro Staff 85 6.0 was Federer’s first Wilson racquet when he burst onto the scene in 1998. It was the racquet he used to defeat his long-time hero Pete Sampras at Wimbledon in 2001 on his way to superstardom. If you’re just starting to play tennis and are in the market for a new racquet but don’t think you’re ready for this one yet, try one of these racquets that are all solid choices for beginners. Pros of the Pro Staff RF97 Autograph Federer uses the 4 and 3/8 grip size so he can get extra wrist snap on his serves and to make changing his grips easier. Roger Federer’s tennis racquet is nothing magical, but his game style and results easily make you think it is. Federer uses his own Wilson Pro Staff RF 97 Autograph racquet that you can buy in the store. He uses Champions Choice strings. If you’re interested in what racquets other ATP pros actually use… read this post about pro player racquets.

It was used in 4 Grand Slams in total right up until the French Open of 2004 where he switched to use then newly released nCode design. The Laver Cup is an indoor event, so is he always using this tension across the year? The answer is no, but Federer doesn’t alter his tension that much throughout the season. The weird part is both sets of racquets (85 and 97) are about 373g, 12ptsHL. I haven’t done actual swingweight measurement, but I am certain 85 is greater. Takes a lot more to energy get head moving. With the PS 90, he would win his first grand slam singles title at the 2003 Wimbledon Championships and would go on to win 17 of his 20 grand slam titles with the PS 90.

This was after trialling several prototypes in the summer of 2013 in Hamburg and Gstaad before eventually settling on the 97 square inch model in the offseason. The image above is taken from the Laver Cup from 2018 in Chicago, and as you can see, Federer is stringing his mains at 27 kgs (59.5lbs) and his crosses at 25.5 kgs (56.2lbs). I’ve only played with basically 2 racquets in my life and I had a question regarding the effectiveness of different racquets. I always hear that people notice huge differences between different types of racquets and strings and state that they vary with control and power. Wild success is not the only thing constant in Roger’s Federer career; his loyalty to the Wilson brand since his junior days, up until his retirement in 2022, is quite admirable. The court legend has a clear favorite, even though he did switch up quite a lot of frame models throughout the years. 1998: Pro Staff Original 6.0 85 Federer started using an 85-inch head because several of his idols used this size, including Stefan Edberg and Pete Sampras.

Roger Federer's first racquet as a professional

The other thing a heavier racquet provides is more stability. Federer opts to play extremely close to the baseline and will move up to the net whenever there is an opportunity.
