About this deal

When used dry, Graphitint provides just a hint of colour but adding water transforms the tint into rich, shimmering shades with an underlying, graphite sheen. As everyone will mix different amounts of water when using these pencils, it would be impossible to give an exact lightfast rating. For instance, Inktense, a unique water-soluble pencil that’s permanent when dry, or Lightfast the oil-based pencil that ensures vibrancy for over 100 years. Derwent Graphitint Pencils have the same properties in terms of hardness and solubility in water as Derwent's popular 4B Watersoluble Sketching Pencil, so you can experiment with adding colour but retain all the familiar qualities of your favourite graphite pencil.

Artists can apply on cold pressed watercolour paper to bring out pools of granulations and passages of tone and colour. After the colours had fully dried, I began applying fine details with the Ocean Blue pencil to create the 'stipple' effect on the wings. The pencils themselves are well proportioned with an amble 8mm, excellent quality, Cedar wood barrel. If your package does not arrive Royal mail requires us to wait for 14 working days before we are able to raise a claim. The paper is heavyweight and water resistant meaning the pencil grabs the paper and does not buckle when water is applied. Personally, I prefer this method for detail as the pencil "leads" are a bit soft to take a very fine point but a fine brush can do it. Derwent has been awarded PEFC Chain of Custody certification to demonstrate our commitment to a sustainable future for the world’s forests, providing assurances that Derwent procures pencil slats from sustainable, legal and traceable sources. Along the gunmetal coloured barrel of the Graphitint pencil, reading from core tip to end cap is the location of the production; England.

Used dry Graphitint produces just a suggestion of colour, but add water to wash out the lines and make the colour much more vibrant. The same goes for the white pencil but always ensure the painting is fully dry before applying dry pencil applications to avoid scratching the surface as already mentioned. I attempted to erase some of the blue colour to see how well I could remove it but was never able to fully erase the tinge. This set however only has 24, but the colours are so gorgeous and even the names given to the colours will push your inspiration along.

Next is the name of the company; Derwent, closely followed by the name of the pencil brand; Graphitint, after which is a small icon depicting a paintbrush, indicating to the user that they are using a watersoluable pencil. When used dry, the lead provides a hint of colour but by adding a little bit of water, it really brings the colour to life, revealing a rich, shimmering shade with a graphite sheen. The core is deceptively dancing with a 4mm shaft of pigment, the reasons for my vague description will become clear during the performance section of this review. They don't offer the same silvery sheen as graphite pencils do and they feel heavier in application. So to answer the questions at the beginning of this review, Are you likely to use them on a painting? With over 150 years of know-how packed into every pencil and art tool, our creative and scientific minds never cease experimenting. p>

45. It is extremely important to have a colour chart to hand when using pencils like these as the 'leads' of these pencils are quite dark and it can be difficult to differentiate between colours. I went over the veins of the wings with the Midnight black and applied fine highlights using the white pencil, ensuring I kept the points sharp for finer lines.

For the most part, the colours in this set are similar to their counterparts in the Derwent Graphitint pencil range once they’ve been activated with water, though not all are an exact match and some (especially a few of the blues) are quite different). I’ve not conducted my own lightfastness test with the pans yet, but the tests I did with some of the pencils showed about half the colour saturation lost within 7 days of starting my test (with the charts pinned to my front window) and the colour was completely gone after a month, so it’s safe to assume a test with the pans would have a similar outcome.p>

Graphitint has the same properties as the Derwent 4B Watersoluble Sketching pencil so it will appeal to artists looking to add a colourful dimension to their graphite drawings but retain all the familiar qualities of their favourite graphite pencil.
