About this deal

Which leads us to Ada Lovelace, the Enchantress of Numbers, and the Mary Engine mentioned briefly in a previous book but I've forgotten which one, could be a novella, which is why I'm writing everything down this time.

That kind of knowledge is world-ending knowledge, and now we have the beginning of another overarching plot. Well buckle up hoopy froods, because more than any other book in the series so far, False Value is an ode to Douglas Adams (with Terry Pratchett's hat on).Book 8 in the Rivers of London series, from Sunday Times Number One bestselling author Ben Aaronovitch. Since the SCC originated from the US, Peter asks Reynolds to look into its background and the head of the company (Terrence Skinner). I thought the series had been getting stronger right up til the point that the Faceless Man gets shot last book, and was wondering where the series would go.

His compassion, his protectiveness of the public, and his sense of humor are additional factors in his lovability. The story is as twisty as I’ve come to expect and I love the character development with Guleed, Peter and Bev in particular. Starting to feel like there have been too many Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy references in this review already? In terms of audio quality, in parts Kobna's normally smooth voice sounded a little rough and gravely. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Aaronovitch is also a trustee on the board of Cityread London and is a long-time supporter of Nigeria's premiere arts and cultural festival, The Ake Festival.

In False Value we see how Beverley Brook, a minor goddess and Peter’s girlfriend, can wield her power. Which leads us to Ada Lovelace, the Enchantress of Numbers, and the Mary Engine mentioned briefly in a previous book but I’ve forgotten which one, could be a novella, which is why I’m writing everything down this time. It's just like old times again, but this time, Peter isn't a bumbling rookie and Nightingale is beginning to treat him more like a colleague and less like a student, possibly easing him into the role as head of the Folly one of these days. I’ve a couple of books to read for book group and don’t want to have anything to tempting to read on my kindle lest I distract myself, so I’ll treat myself once I finish the duty-reads. This swirling inconsistency and feeling of time being stretched, squished, smooshed, and otherwise manipulated, suited the theme very nicely once I stopped feeling like I was grappling with an Infinite Improbability Drive.

I’m so sad that Rivers of London, which I adored in the beginning, seems to have petered out so feebly (oh, sorry, just realised what I did there). We still have mention of all the river gods and goddesses and an underground history of magic practitioners.A bit of wrangling needed to happen and the full interesting import of later spoiler territory plot items comes to fruition nicely. Having nonchalantly skipped a re-read of the previous book in the Peter Grant arc of the Rivers of London series, Lies Sleeping, I was at a bit of a loss when this audiobook began with Peter starting work at a tech company having been suspended from his job with the Metropolitan Police, and The Folly. I was wondering how Aaronovitch was going to fit in and pull off Peter’s parenthood with the same entertaining aplomb that he has all the other elements in the series. A technology that stretches back to Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage and forward to the future of artificial intelligence. The bonus interview at the end is fab and I really appreciate the insight, not to mention it’s a fun listen.
