About this deal

Focussing exclusively on tall, smart floor lamps, there aren’t many competing devices to choose from when it comes to the Hue Signe Floor lamp. The most notable rival is the Govee RGBIC Floor Lamp. This is also an LED floor lamp that comes with RGB options and a design very similar to the Signe. Govee has emulated many of Philips’ Hue products at notably lower prices. I use Govee’s lamp, TV strip, and lighting bars, and I like them all. Indeed, they’re not the same quality in terms of build and materials, but they do at least offer much of the same functionality, including a decent app to control multiple lights. For me personally, I think a pair of Gradient Signe's positioned behind my sofa, linked up to a Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box, would be where they'd fit in best physically, as they'd be ideal as powerful mood lighters for movies, TV shows and games.

But, the Gradient Signe just didn't seem to naturally fit in with my home's aesthetic, which doesn't lean toward clean white walls and open spaces that I feel this lamp most suits. I've either got colored, painted walls or patterned wallpaper (see image above showing the grasses wallpaper in my living room as an example). Overall, then, I feel the Philips Hue Gradient Signe Floor Lamp offers a lot to potential buyers, and it is one of the most versatile smart lighting products that I've tested. It’s the way in which colours blend that’s particularly impressive. Use the different segments and colours smartly blend together, rather than displaying a harsh line between them. It’s an impressive bit of tech, able to project a rainbow of colours onto a wall. That goes double for the dynamic scenes, with colours subtly moving around the segments.

Having these segments also expands the scenes available. There are some fun scenes, such as greedy snake, which mimics the old Nokia Snake game using light. These dynamic effects, combined with the segments are hugely impressive. Govee uses RGBIC tech for the Lyra, which offers 16 million colours, a 2200K to 6500K colour temperature, and 1500 lumens of brightness. This translates to the lamp that isn’t only great for ambience but one that’s bright enough on a practical level, too – for reading, say, or just for having more diffuse lighting than the main light provides. Lastly, in terms of gripes, try as hard as I might I just couldn't get the Signe to look - at least in my opinion - at home in any of the rooms of my house. Maybe it was its proportions, or the fact that I don't have free corners in rooms with neutral white or off-white walls, or that it didn't really go with a lot of my furniture, but whatever it was I struggled to make room for it – and certainly so in a way that meant there wasn't a wire trailing too far across the carpet. The Govee Lyra Floor Lamp comes in a box that looks way too small to fit in a tall lamp (1448 x 135 x 135mm). This is because you have to assemble the light first. It’s a slightly fiddly process. First, you need to screw together the upstand, which comprises a series of metal pieces.

So at night time the Gradient Signe really pops. Imagine a lightsaber being lit up in a dark cave. And that's great for adding mood to rooms in the twilight hours or, excitedly for anyone who also invests in a Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box, incredible extra synchronized mood lighting for movies, TV shows, or playing video games. Taking it out of the box, I was really blown away by the strength and quality of the design of the Signe. Our oak model has a lovely wood-toned, circular base and an otherwise-aluminum construction. It’s incredibly solid and well-built, with no blemishes or wonkiness. Hue might be the most expensive smart lighting brand on the market, but there’s no denying you’re getting premium build quality at the very least.

As with the Philips Hue Gradient, the Govee Lyra Floor Lamp is an advanced LED strip that lets you adjust colour in segments. Here, there are eight segments, which you can paint in different colours. Slightly fiddly construction doesn’t get in the way of a brilliant colour-changing lamp, which offers some neat gradient effects and a clever app. Design and features The Signe floor lamp is controlled with the Philips Hue app. That means if you've got Hue lights already, the Signe is super simple to drop into your existing rooms and automations. I've been using mine in the bedroom, where I have it set to mimic the sunrise each morning — an increasingly useful feature as the actual sunrise creeps later and later into the day. It's got a dedicated sunrise lighting style, which uses shades of blue, orange, and yellow to give the impression of the morning sky at dawn. But with enough fiddling, you could set the Signe to turn on to any combination of colors at whatever time you please. Colours are excellent on this model. Cheaper LED strips often suffer in this area, but the range here is excellent, with strong and bright hues across the range.
