About this deal

Although this is not presented as a Klon clone, this transparent overdrive by a very reputable builder presents uncanny similarities in tone and response. A glass knob controls the treble without affecting the bass frequencies and coexists with a tone knob. The second ‘Magical’ circuit, is totally different, and produces a much more compressed and higher gain sound. It is perhaps a little misleading to include the Klon KTR in this list. Technically speaking, I don’t think it can be classified as a ‘clone’. This is because the KTR was also made by Bill Finnegan – the designer of the original Klon Centaur. You should get an instant answer on whether your application has been successful, though in some rare cases Klarna or V12 may need to look at the application in more detail.

NUX’s Horseman is a two-in-one Klon Centaur tribute

I've only just come to grips with this thing - so far I've used it on the Silver mode running the gain flat out, and also as a clean boost on the Gold mode. The Golden Horse from Mosky is maybe one of the cheapest Klon Centaur clones available today. But don’t let the price fool you, the Golden Horse definitely does a good job at nailing the Klon sound, making it a solid choice if you’re looking for a budget-friendly Klon Centaur clone. NUX Horseman has an optional bypass mode. You can use the pedal in True Bypass mode to keep your signal untouched when the pedal is OFF in the chain. We highly recommend to select buffer bypass mode if you have more than 4 pedals connected together; switch to Buffer Bypass mode and there will be no signal loss in your pedal chain! Yet having said this, so great is the hype that surrounds the original Centaur, that even most clones of the pedal are quite pricey.Plugged in, the Horseman is a simple affair – and there’s nothing wrong with that. It has an on/off switch and three control knobs – the holy trinity of Gain, Treble and Output. You don’t want to be fumbling around on a dimly lit stage with sweaty fingers dialling in a sound. For all its mystique this is a pedal that you want to keep simple. It should also be known that there are two models of Centaur – the Gold and Silver as they have become known. The Gold is more a clean boost, the Silver is closer to the sound of driving the front end of an amp into distortion. Those clever folks at NUX have managed to combine the two in one pedal. When held down, the on/off switch changes the mode from Silver to Gold, giving you a choice of characteristic. Whether you’re looking for a pure clean boost or a slightly rough around the edges overdrive, you’ll find yourself in safe hands here. So if you are looking to get the legendary Klon tones, but you are budget conscious, this could make a great addition to your pedalboard. Ceriatone Centura Professional Overdrive Klon Centaur-based overdrive offering both a buffered clean boost with plenty of chime and a rich transparent overdrive for pushing your edge of breakup tones into singing lead. The voicing switch shifts the frequency range of the Treble control. In V3 a new selection of diodes adds a new tonal dimension to the higher gain settings and a bass control allows for a little extra tone shaping. Due to the popularity of the original Klon Centaur, there are now literally hundreds of Klon clones to choose from. The legendary Klon Centaur that we all know and love is described by some as the perfect overdrive pedal.

2023 UPDATE: Best Klon Centaur Clones: Replicas And

This arrives with all of the parts you need to build your own ‘Klone’ from scratch. Given the number of components in the Centura, it isn’t an easy build, but it could be a great project if you like tweaking and modding your own gear.It has the’ transparent’ overdrive, the warm and rich drive tones, and the ability to enhance the sound of any guitar and amp combination. Fortunately – various pedal manufacturers have created brilliant copies of the Klon (often wittily referred to as ‘Klones’). You will also be glad to know that these pedals are much more budget friendly than the original. Since a centaur is half human, half horse, and the NUX NOD-1 Horseman Overdrive is half gold, half silver – it could be argued this is more of a centaur than the real thing. Dial in these two modes with a straightforward control layout that minimizes time fiddling, so you can spend more time revelling in superior drive tones:

If you think there any really special ‘Klones’ that I’ve missed from this list, please share them. I’d love to hear about them! Images The Horseman overdrive from NUX is another worthy contender in the affordable Klon Centaur clone world. With both “Gold” and “Silver” modes, the Horseman contains a ton of Klon-inspired tones, in a small enclosure. It features the same simple controls as the Klon, and there are also some design similarities. It has the same oxblood control knobs, and has a logo of the mythical Centaur across the front. You see, everyone expected this to sound “not very good” but instead it sounds extremely close to the originals. By holding down the footswitch you swap from gold to silver mode which has slightly higher gain, what a fantastic way to go about something that others have never done. If you’re looking for a Klon Centaur clone, here is a list of some of the best Klon Centaur clones available today.

Now comes the NUX Horseman- a none too subtle reference to the original unit if ever there was one. The Klon Centaur boasts a massive footprint by today’s standards, and NUX have managed to make its take on it even more viable by producing it in the increasingly popular mini pedal format – it literally fits in the palm of your hand. Without even plugging it in it can easily raise a certain amount of suspicion. So if you are looking for a Klon clone, and you also want lots of tone tweaking possibilities, the Tumnus Deluxe could be a brilliant choice. Unlike the original Klon, the default set up of the Sugar Drive is true bypass. However, MXR have given you the option to easily change this via a switch on the side of the pedal.

Nux Horseman OD – Thomann UK

The Mjolnir from Mythos Pedals should absolutely be on your radar if you’re shopping around for Klon clones. The Mjolnir holds true to the original Klon sound, but Mythos Pedals have made a few adjustments to the circuit to make it a bit more modern for today’s world. My conclusion was that although the Klon is a brilliant sounding pedal, the price of used Klons has less to do with the tone of the pedal, and more to do with its popularity amongst famous guitarists, its scarcity, and the mystery behind its production. True/Buffer Bypass– There is an optional bypass mode enabling the signal to be untouched when this stompbox is disengaged. Another great option if you are looking for a clone that stays faithful to the original is the ‘RYRA The Klone Pedal’.

Frequently Asked Questions about NUX Pedals

To show off its flexibility, the Horseman can run in either true bypass or buffered bypass. This is a feature the original didn't offer. This meant whenever the pedal was plugged in, it would colour your tone, even when disengaged. Supporting true bypass allows the Horseman to offer deluxe drive when engaged, but not affect your signal in the slightest when disengaged. Classic tone, superior performance. Specifications
