About this deal

Firstly you need to complete the first section, in the TV studio location, moving around the cameras. The price. Despite the low piece count, the minifigure collection alone sells this set. The extra builds are a bonus. The piece numbers on this set are extremely low, at less than 70, but let’s face it, you’re not buying this set for the rudimentary builds, this is very much about the minifigures on offer. Aren’t they glorious? Benny’s Space Squad is made up of a colourful collection of clones with similar names, Jenny, Kenny, and Lenny and with the exception of their colour you can’t tell them apart. Once this is all done you need to continue with the level, once you are able to build each part of the ship (master build this is high lighting three things green), you do this for all three with Benny of course once the last one is complete! To be very honest with you I don’t think Benny’s Spaceship is the best LEGO ship ever, or that it even lives up to the legacy of the LEGO Classic Space sets (besides the color scheme). Yes, I will get it as soon as it gets released, but I’m already planning on how to modify it – which is of course totally in line with the spirit of The LEGO Movie, and I also know little Benny is going to help me out. 🙄

Just so you know mine popped after the second build not the third, as it states complete all master builds this must be cumulative. Then the early-mid 80’s happened. The not so smart switch from the blue/gray to white/blue color scheme that you noted. Plus other things like growing up, college, career, marriage, kids, etc. 🙂 If you are interested in LEGO Classic Space designs, I highly recommend the book LEGO Space: Building the Future by Peter Reid and Tim Goddard. It is full of amazing LEGO Space creations in the spirit of LEGO Classic Space, and even includes instructions for some of the models. (Below is a beautiful updated rendition of the #928 LEGO Galaxy Explorer by Peter.) I have reviewed this book previously here: LEGO Book – LEGO Space: Building the Future As we move further through the instruction booklet, the builds start to get a little more complex (though this is an exceptionally easy build). Our second retro build is a lunar buggy with the kind of the design you, yourself would have come up with if you’re a kid of the 80s. Not a complaint in anyway shape or form, it’s a wonderful homage to the hours I spent as a child building small-wheeled space buggy’s.As a budget set, I can’t fault it, the minifigure value alone sells this set for me. As a LEGO Movie set, I can’t fault it, Benny’s established obsession with spaceships would definitely see him seeking out other retro minifigures. As a classic space set, I can’t fault it, it’s a wonderful homage to an era when I was first introduced to LEGO. This set is faultless. The mixture of grey, blue and yellow pieces means that this guy looks like he belongs in a retro space movie with Benny by his side. The arms can be rotated and, of course, you can also set the lever-piece antenna to whatever angle you need. Other than this, however, you’re going to need a bit of imagination power for playtime here. Lunar Buggy I can hardly wait until the release of the #70816 The LEGO Movie Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! (yes, that is the official name), and in the meantime I have been looking over images of the upcoming set, as well as pictures of the old LEGO Classic Space sets Benny’s ship is based on.

LEGO Classic Space is still a favorite of many LEGO fans both young and old, and is very much alive. Including Benny in The LEGO Movie is a touching commemoration of the original LEGO Space theme, and releasing an updated spaceship is making LEGO Classic Space fans dreams come true! I’m positive that Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! is going to be gobbled up as soon as it gets released. 😀 There isn’t a great deal to say about the minifigures that you can’t already see, the colour being the only defining feature on the minifigures. That said, they do come equipped with different accessories. Upon getting a new set, I would build the new ship per the instructions. Then look at it for maybe 10 minutes. Then take it apart and build it differently. Or even better, combine the parts with other sets to come up with a unique creation of my own.

Benny’s Spaceship

The most iconic LEGO Classic Space set is the #928 LEGO Galaxy Explorer released in 1979. There were also a couple of smaller ships designed in the same style and released the same year; the #918 LEGO Space Transport, and the #924 LEGO Space Cruiser. Many other sets came out of the LEGO Classic Space line all the way to 1986, when although the same logo remained, the color-scheme changed from gray & blue to white & blue. I don’t so much like the later sets, but the earlier ones are some of the best LEGO sets ever designed.

This ship could have been cut straight out of a 1980’s classic space set and you’d never know the difference and I LOVE IT. 13 pieces make up this beauty and every one of them has been used brilliantly to create something worthy of Benny’s spaceship obsession in this budget set. I’ve not built anything with Legos for 30+ years. But, after all this time, I did manage to save 3 intact original creations of mine built with Classic Lego Space parts. They have not been changed since 1982.
