About this deal

Wild bees have adapted to humanities influence on life on Earth, using plastic to build nests, nesting in cities, or feeding on sugary waste from soda instead of flowers. This book will be useful for scientists and readers who are studying biology, animal behaviour, neurophysiology, and evolution.

The small font seemed uninviting when I first began but fit the content and tone of the book quite well. The time that insects were seen as little machines, incapable of complex thought, emotions, and learning, is far behind us. Also - the book is filled with high color photos and diagrams, so read it either in dead tree, or colored device. Instead of cleaning the house this afternoon, I made a pollen slide and discovered that this pollen is indeed phacelia. They don’t like bitter or sour substances with the exception of some neonicontinoids used as pesticides. The book is very enlightening in showing how the sensory organisms of bees provide their minds with different information than our human senses do. A very deep delve into the sensory world of bees, you start to understand what is important to them and how they perceive the world.

The Mind of a Bee review: Can a bee have a form of

That said, the importance of understanding the subjectively conscious life of bees is not lost on me. Among his books is The Life of the Bee (1901), and I found a free version in the Internet Archive, as an ePub-book – this book is lovely but has to be reviewed another time! Bees can tell when a flower has been recently visited by the change in electrical charge of the blossom. Bees are surrounded by a small positive electrical field, and flowers are (literally) grounded or slightly negative.

While the subject is utterly fascinating, I found my mind wandering all too often as I struggled to maintain interest in its presentation.

The author tells us that “consciousness is a state of awareness that enables animals to live not just in the present but also to have access to the past and the future”. That reward put them in a good mood and they would accept the ambiguous stimulus with less hesitation. Sensing polarized light as well as ultraviolet instead of red is also interesting and seems to help facilitate their navigation capabilities. More evidence is needed, he said, but in the past, academics have not bothered to even ask these questions about insects. He shows that they are profoundly smart, have distinct personalities, can recognize flowers and human faces, exhibit basic emotions, count, use simple tools, solve problems, and learn by observing others.
